Athlete honors vs. actor honors.

An athlete usually has to perform at a high level for an entire season to be honored with an MVP award or (fill in a name) Trophy. Even then, the rest of his team has to provide a playing environment that allows him to perform so well. Great performance by an offensive line and receivers make any quarterback look good.

What if they gave an award for "best performance by a cornerback" for a single game or even a single play? Apply that question to any athlete who plays as part of a team.

It annoys me (not a big deal, lots of things annoy me :redface: ) that Oscars for "best performance by an actor" get morphed into "best actor" by the media. Actors perform as part of a team. Without a good story, well produced, filmed and directed the performance would receive little notice.

These awards, in both enterprises, are largely a way to enhance the marketing of the enterprise but are still usually well earned in my view.

To me, an Oscar for lifetime achievement says a lot more than for performance in a single film. I would like something more than election to the Hall Of Fame to honor a career of distinction for an athlete. To have an award named for him, like the Butkus Trophy, satisfies that to some degree.

Please forgive my rambling, but this comparison has been on my mind and I would like some others' thoughts.

Kinda' funny for me - my outlook is slightly different. I'm an artist/designer by trade, and wind up at "awards ceremonies" for art/ad work regularly. At the end of most of these events (while it's nice to win), you leave with an okay trophy and the feeling all of us in the industry pretty much just sat around congratulating each other on how great we are.

And so, being that jaded I find that same type of idea in most "Hollywood" awards.

When you look back at guys like Norman Rockwell, Carl Lewis, Gordie Howe, Boris Karloff and the like ... there are no where near as many "awards" as there are accomplishments.

Banning Pete Rose from the hall of fame for gambling, "after" his career accomplishments, has made -all sport and acting awards- political/suspect to me.

To me, knowing how the Oscars are voted on takes away all of the real meaning for the individual trophies. The ballots are passed out to the voting members and then are sometimes decided on by children or relatives - by some voters own admission. It's mostly peers patting each other on the back.

Now, as far as not having as many "awards" as there are accomplishments? I can understand that because well, where would you stop?

I agree the the picture is only as good as the actors and vice verse. The same with football for the QB and his team - especially the QB protection. And they rarely get any kind of award. Somewhere along the line there probably have been many overlooked actors and players that were never recognized because of this.​

In my opinion;

At the minor league level(in acting and sports) the outstanding achievement of any one person is a personal achievement. These people should get awards because as a rule they carry the team/play.

When they go pro and awards are given its all for marketing. A way to keep the publics interest.

Most of us graduate, grow up and go on to perform a lifetime of work without anymore trophies, awards or public adulation. It seems that is mostly reserved for the perpetually immature.

Hollywood awards are IMO nothing but self promotion of the industry with little to no value to the average viewer. Some people actually like to watch these folks strut their stuff, but to me it's nothing but a chest thumping event, created and promoted by and for themselves to justify their ego's.

Athletes are kind of in the same boat, in that the best athlete is rarely the selected person for many of the awards offered. But in the end these awards are just more self promotion for overpaid jocks who are nothing but entertainment for some of the masses. Putting these people on a pedestal and paying them the amounts of $ they earn just doesn't add up to me, but to each their own. I don't go to the movies and I don't watch pro sports except for golf, for this very reason.
