Re: Atlas outboard motor?

That's a strange one to me. But here's what I know: Back in the 1950's Atlas was a trade name for tires and batteries and stuff sold by Standard Oil Company. There was an Atlas "Royal" outboard made by Gale Products Division of OMC, from 1948 thru 1956.

However, your model number is not even close. So I don't know what you have. How about a picture?

A "2A3" Atlas is a 1947-48 5 hp, made by Gale...same as the Sea Kings, Hiawatha's, Sea Bee's of the era. Nice reliable little motors, only the outside paint colors/badging/tank designs differed from one brand to another.

Great........here are pics, it is a mod 2A3...ser# is 239868 ( this was hard to see).....says 5 hp....here are pics, seems to be in very good condition, guy said it ran a couple of years ago. The only thing that doesnt look origanal is the gas cap....hopefully I can find one.
Fuel ratio? 24:1
spark plug?
I assume it is a magneto ignition...or points and condensor?

Re: Atlas outboard motor?

It is a magneto ignition with coils, points, condensors...very easy to maintain. Fuel ratio is 16:1, spark plug is Champion J7J gapped at .030 and point gap is .020. Check for compression and spark. If it checks out okay, get it running and use it. Oh yeah, it probably uses an old-style wobbler impeller rather than a vaned impeller...not too hard to find or too pricey.

Re: Atlas outboard motor?

Your recoil starter is missing. Gotta love the funky design of those old Gales. The "impeller" is properly called a "rotor". It oscillates around ("wobbles") in the pump housing just forward of the propeller. It should just touch one side of the housing and have a space on the opposite side. As it wobbles, the space progresses around to the outlet and then dissapears, forcing water up through the tube. Then the space reappears on the intake side to take another gulp of water to move around to the outlet side. If there is no space on one side, the rotor is swollen up from grease leaking out of the gearcase. The holes in the propeller force-feed water to the pump intake.

In addition, aomci.org has their own free classified ads page. Just place a "wanted" ad. I've had good luck finding whatever I've needed there and can't beat the ad price.
