rareheir,The black color of the lower unit oil is normal depending on when it was last changed.Old unchanged lower unit oil is often dark in color. So far as the replacement of propshaft seal , there is no reason to change it out if there is no leak from lower unit and no sign of water intrusion. The propshaft seal is contained within an assembly that is cylindrical in shape and consists of the propshaft seals and "o"rings that seal the assy. to lower unit housing. After removal of the prop the bolts that contain this assy. are recessed in lower unit housing approx. 6" .A puller is required to remove assy. and change seals and "o"rings, however as recommended there is no need to change out seals unless you suspect one is failing.I do recommend you change out fill and vent screw seal washers when changing oil in lower unit as they can also be a source of water intrusion.

Hi David
Please keep questions on the same subject on the same post. This will help us help you. That way it allows everybody to follow along. Sometimes the other guys have a better idea on how to do something, or can explain it better.
Now lets figure out whats wrong with your motor. Are you 100% sure that it is gear oil that is leaking? Did you remove the prop? The thrust bushing would have nothing to do leaking oil. Yes by removing the two bolts/cap screws the gear case head can be removed. You will how ever need a manual and some special tools to perform this work. I would not mess with it though, untill your sure you indeed have a gear oil leak. Since there was no water in the gear case, this makes me wonder. I would suggest that you presure test and vacuum test the gear case. These procedures are outlined in the manuals. I you don't want to cough up for a book, see if you can check one out at the library. Believe me these manuals are worth every penney.
