Attaching lower unit

I have a 89 25 HP Evinrude. I changed the water pump, now the problem. The lower unit is about 3/8" from contacting the exhaust housing and will not move further. I rotated the flywheel the driveshaft feels engaged, I saw no damage to the splines and everything came apart easily. I could see the water tube start. The shift rod can be seen in the water port and feels free. What should I do now?

Hard to visualize but try putting the motor into forward gear.Then see what happens.<br /><br />DHP

OK I got it back togather, it was the plastic driveshaft tube on top of the water pump. <br /><br />I put muffs on the motor of course. Now the new pump pumps no water. I saw the water tube start into the pump. <br /> <br />The old one looked good but pumped no water. It was working and slowed down pumping in the lake, and pumped nothing at home with muffs. <br /><br />This is getting hard for an easy job, I sure appreciate the help.
