I stumbled on to this on the BOAT/US site:<br /><br /> http://www.boatus-forum.com/ubb/Forum11/HTML/001457.html <br /><br />The "Red Tape" Bill has passed the IL Senate and went to the House yesterday. Read the story in the link above & contact your representatives.<br /><br />This bill will require all numbered watercraft in the state to attach a 1" band of reflective tape the length of the hull, above the waterline.<br /><br />I don't know about y'all, But I ain't real enthusiastic about puttin' that ugly tape on my shiney Lund.<br /><br />Get the word out!<br /><br />-John

Sounds dumb to me; most boating is done during daylight hours . This act would accomplish very very little regarding safety. This state senator must not have much on his plate to come up with a bill like this. Maybe he dosen't realize that navigation lights are already a requirement. :(

Just another way for the state government to collect more money from their already overtaxed citizens, and disguise it as a safety feature.

Heh Heh..I know how to cure that..Have your local represenative add an amendment to the bill that they add that stripe to all cars jus to be safe...especialy the reps Mercedes or Porche so that we know who they are and not run into them at night.

Hi, I'm pretty new to boating and from California whatever that means. But common sense tells me that 'reflective' tape needs a source of light to reflect. and like someone else said - most boating is done during the day when a boat will be much more obvious than a piece of tape. So, at night, when the tape should be working, nav lights on boats just 'glow' unlike headlights on a car that put put a beam of light which would offer enough light for the tape to reflect. Maybe your local politician has a brother in law with a reflective tape company or something because the way I see it, the tape will be completely useless.

I thought only New York came up with things like this. I like the idea of the politicians putting the tape on thier cars. Only it should be two rows of 2" just to show thye are jerks. Like it was said earlier, if you don't have enough light hitting the tape you wouldn't see it. Also most of the problems come with the drunks at night and they can't see anything anyway. Sounds like the IL politicians don't do much boating.

I would like to see if it goes through if the state has to pay for the tape. Are there any kind of rights you may have if you bought the boat before the bill gets passed? Sounds like the guy who couldn't find his daughter on the boat should put reflective tape on his own boat not everyone else's. Are they going to try to pass a law requiring people to add headlights and tail lights to all boats on the water?
