I have a 1997 Mercury 60hp tiller model, the motor starts easily and runs great. the only problem i have is i recieve an audible alrm if the motor is at idle speed for more than 5 minutes. forward, reverse or nueteral doesnt seem to matter. the motor does not give the alarm other than at idle speed of less than 1500 rpms.
it doesnt seem to matter if i have just started the motor an it is idleing at the dock warming up, or if i have been cruising the lake for an hour, if i drop the rpms to idle (<1500 rpms) it is a time frame of about 5 minutes when the audible alarm is sounded.
I love this motor and the way it performs please help, im afraid im going to cause some serious damage!
...........Gunslinger_pa

You don't mention the type of alarm. Is it a beep-beep-beep or beeeeeeeeeeeep ? If it is a steady tone, that is an overheat alarm and chances are that the waterpump impeller needs replaceing. Not pumpimg enough water at low rpm to keep the motor cool.

it is a steady beep, i thought it might be a heat thing just do to the time frame involved. thank you for the information. can you give me a ball park figure on what it might cost to have an impeller installed??
thanks again!
...Gunslinger
