Aussie import duties

I am trying to figure out if there are any import duties and/or taxes on engine parts shipped to Oz. I understand we have a free trade agreement, and from what I can tell by reading the agreement there should be no duties. However, our dealers' down there are claiming 35% for duties and taxes. Does anybody know the real story? Curious about complete boats too, but that's just for fun. I think our dealers are stickin' it to us on warranty claims . . .

Thanks Elmer. I was a dealer once too . . . Service Manager. Kinda like taxes. Go for whatever you can, and if they reject it, OK . . .

Y0U can find the rules for most countrys on the net NOT that you will be able to understand them <br /><br />I inport ballet shoes for my daughter from england and got the rules the book for shoes is and 1" thick <br /><br />Are they dispoables/do they last more than 3 days/ect all lawyer talk that goes around in circles<br /><br />tommays

At first glance it seems like there is nothing that's taxed except "second-hand vehicles", but then there is a fee schedule type thing. WTF!!<br /><br />I am hoping somebody here actually ships stuff for a living and can make sense out of it. I am not lazy, but I spent around two hours reading that stuff and then started going cross-eyed . . . PITA.

I ship stuff weekly to Canada and all I do is fill out a customs form. When the item gets to Canada they have to pay the import tax/fee on the item. I am sure if you are shipping parts they are of course "used" parts and no real value.... so the fees may be cheaper.<br /><br />Try sending him a "test" maybe an old part or a small part.

We are shipping new stuff though. Weekly. They pay all of the fees and we don't do nuttin'<br />Yeah, I could get the info, hoping somebody knows as I am working on a little analysis thingee. Thanks<br /><br />BTW, tried to look at the clips. That first one bored me to tears. Why is she rolling on the ground choking herself? Is there any blow up stuff of yours in those trailers?

Not in that trailer but the one from Landslide has the explosion I use as my avatar. I am "exclusive" to that studio... all his explosions are mine..... most of the guns are mine too.

You're right.. there should be no import tariffs due to the FTA. Imports do get charegd a 10% GST (goods and services tax) and customs charge a 5% customs duty. That adds up to a total of 15% in my books.<br /><br />35% seems a tad optimistic.

The FTA is being phased in over a period of years. All duties will reduce to zero eventually. The scale and rate of reduction varies from industry to industry - I'm still trying to nail down the rate for engine parts. Me thinks it's 10% plus 5% BUT, the 10% is calculated after the 5% is added - or visaversa......................

Only a government would fabricate such a method to charge fees with! Compounding charges allow them to squeeeeeeze a few extra tenths out of ya.

I think this link is the closest thing to a final word I can find:<br /><br /> Customs Tariff thing <br /><br />If you go all of the way to the bottom there is a listing of all of the items by chapter (everything above . . .) which have a phase in schedule. As I read it, anything not on that list is free from any tariff.<br /><br />Thanks for the info on the customs duty Kanga.
