I have a 50 Merc 4 cyl with a Australian Ser no 8055895.
The marinshopen site doesn't refer to Canadian, Euro or Aussie no's so I'm trying to get age from it's features.
It has wrapper type cover with pull cord in bag in the end, Electric start, 2 tone blue bands, Thunderbolt distributorless ignition and no Power trim. It still has 125lbs in all 4 cyl and runs and looks great. 2 service mechanics here have said 1985 but in the manual covering 1965-89 it tends to associate aust nos below 806... with USA no s 568... But because we are so far behind here, perhaps it is an '85 but back dated.
Any thoughts ??
And... Is there any benefit in putting a Hydro-tail on it ? or just a waste of money ?

http://au.photos.yahoo.com/bc/andre...bc/andrewkafp/lst?&.dir=/photos&.src=ph&.view =t

A good merc dealer should be able to tell you the year if not repost & ill make enquiries ..I would think early 80s at a guess.A hydrofoil will help if your boat is underpowered/struggles to get out of the hole.
