You don't say what model carb, but if there are vacuum fittings that are capped off with rubber covers, then you have an automotive carb.

Re: auto carb/marine carb

unless i'm missing something i don't believe that capped off vacuum ports mean it's an automotive carb. The carburetor main body casting is no different for a marine version, and most if not all carbs have vacuum access tubes coming off them for various accessories, example = distributor vacuum advance. If you don't have a distr. with vacuum advance, which boats don't, then that particular port on the carb is always capped off. No big deal. I know Holley's are like that. Rochesters have various places they will leak from, and I'm not even sure if all "marine" rochesters have j-tubes to vent the bowl back down the throat of the carb.
also, the engine year, make, model along with the carb model and year would be helpful.

It sure appears as if its automotive, but at this point I would scrap that carb and buy a marine carb (rebuilt or new ) If its spilling that much fuel it does not really matter if the current carb is auto or marine its still a major hazard. And yes a marine carb should have J-vent tubes and a clear line from fuel pump to carb base. Check out E-bay under marine carbs for various photos.

Re: auto carb/marine carb

I see new PCM marine engines with carbs that have vacum caps all the time.
the carb model may be helpful as rochester has supplied varios versions of 1bbl,2bbl and 4bbl carbs to the marine industry since about the mid 1940's.never saw a quadra-jet with a J tube as the vent is moved aft of the carb throat slightly.
occasionally I will find a reman with a modified tube. the clear hose from the fuel pump goes to the carb passage that is not drilled on the auto version . so while its possible to easily modify the auto version of the q-jet I dont reccomend it. jetting and airvalve and powervalve springs get a bit tricky sometimes.

Re: auto carb/marine carb

That hose COMES from the fuel pump and GOES to the carb to carry any fuel from a ruptured diaphram in the fuel pump.if this veny area of the pump was sealed, the diaphran wont pump fuel.

Re: auto carb/marine carb

sounds like you need a MARINE fuel pump as well if you don't have that hose.

Better look at the starter while you're at it... and the distributor.

na na the fuel pume is a marine pump. it has the clear hose connect to it but the carb dont have the nipple for that hose to fit on to. i am 100% sure it is marine, my starter is a marine also, mt altanator is marine also, it just this carb junk, so when i got the edelbrock carb do i have to get a new fuel line for that also???. also which choke is best to get on that ect ect

I Might be Wrong,.............Again........

But,.....
If we're talking about a 4bbl. Carb.......

I believe that you're going to need a 1400 series carb......1409, maybe.....

Re: auto carb/marine carb

Just because there is no place on the carb to hook the clear hose from the fuel pump to doesn't make the carb "Non" Marine. Depending on the year, make, model of your engine, some had a connection on the flame arrestor for the hose.
Do you have a picture of your carb that you could post? Also, we talking Merc, Volvo, OMC, and what model and year.

Re: auto carb/marine carb

My search for that number shows it is a marine carb, rochester 4mv that was used on a 5 litre chevy/omc sterndrive.
