auto oiler on Yamaha 150

we have a 95 yamaha 150 outboard. my husband thinks that the auto oiler might not be working as good as it should. can this be by-passed,and we just start mixing our own oil & gas, or simply adjusted? if adjustment is all we need to do, then how. some ppl have told us not to trust the auto oiler, and disconnect it, but i am not sure....it seems to be smoking good.

if the maint on the oil system is done its all but bullet proof. way more reliable than most folks premixing.
especially if your dealing with large tanks.
what part seems not to be working well ?
