i'm about to re-install a lower steering shaft in my vehicle. you really don't need to know what it is. its a question about fixing a prob with loose steering... kinda like "floating" on the road. :D

dadgummit, ok, its a cj7

i've read the haynes manual, i've gotten info from 'ask the experts'... i don't hold it against anyone, i just want a 2nd opinion. :D

this is only the replacement of the steering coupling, which is a kit. it is basically a bell housing to allow a universal joint type of connection to the steering gearbox.

i found the very same topic in "all experts" free website. it is perfect. but it doesn't list the replies to the question

so i found out i should expect to remove the (pwr)steering box. and i did. and the kit when dry-installed- does appear to be the solution. i had to wait for 2nd day to post a followup question(they take 2/day).

i need to know what (enclosed) grease type should be used? i'm currently waiting for another manual to arrive... i mentioned that the grease appeared to be 00grease. but i only have hi-temp wheel bearing grease.

it was suggested to use rearend dope. ya know, 85-90 wt gear lube.

i understand that. but the coupler has a hole in the bottom, probably 1/16". i don't mean a slit on the side- its a hole drilled right in the middle of the 1/2" steel plate... i don't think the advice matches the application.

pls advise if you can- i don't want to replace/re-install this PITA later, if you know what i mean :)

Re: auto steering coupler questions

oops, did i say 176k? make that 276k on my sweet leetle toy pickemup... still need to get my cj7 all fixtup ;)

just to say i said it-(and should not have)i ran it(toyota) up to @ 113mph last summer, just to see if it would do it without floating the valves & crapping out. but normally, i don't drive it over 65mph.

i have a fairly decent reason- it was the only night of the week that my wife expects me home early, and i failed 2 times... but this yr things are cool, our little sweetie 4yr old is very little stress. :)

:D it was on I-85N just above atlanta, where the truckers usually do @ 90mph...

Lubriplate 630-AA should work fine. It's of medium viscosity, lithium based, extremely waterproof and high pressure.
This is also a perfect grease to lubricate the steering components on your outboard. An added bonus is that it's a white grease and won't look to nasty when making a mess.

One more thought. That little hole may be a perfect candidate to tap and install a zerk fitting? Hmmmm? ;)

Re: auto steering coupler questions

please don't check out now. i guess when you say "zerk" you mean a grease fitting? that would be nice. but no, this thing goes down on top of the steering gearbox. not open, but not a grease-tight fitting, hence my wonder on the type of grease. :D this "bellhousing" will have a bottom collar with splines to fit around the steering gearbox outer shaft.

and i was wondering- on that grease type you listed... in layman's terms- does that mean, uh, what is the name listed at walmart? :D when i think of lubriplate, only a tube of wheelbearing grease comes into my mind... (simple as it is) :p

Re: auto steering coupler questions

I wasn't understanding where the hole was you were talking about. I just got back in from out back after taking a look at the YJ. I'd still use the Lubriplate.
Along with the already mentioned reasons I'll add a few more.
1. I already have it on hand. This is the grease that is supplied with my jetpump to lube the main pump bearing.
2. This is the bearing that directly supports the jetpump impeller and spins 6k rpm for hours and is submurged in water.
3. This grease is so waterproof and so sticky that you can accidently have a little glob of it on the hull of your aluminum boat and it'll still be there after a weekend of boating. Yet it will wipe up easily.
4. I now use it to lube all those zerks on the YJ, Toy4x4, F250 steering and ujoints. Pretty amazing stuff how it sticks to the water blasted rear ujoint of your vehicles. BTW, my Toy4x4 just turned 240k and has all the original ujoints.
5. It's reasonably priced, $9 a tube.

Just type in Lubriplate and you can order from thier website. You local marine place probably has it as well.
You may also consider using just plain old marine wheel brg. grease.

Ahh, it's nice to be loved! :)
