Auto switches for bilge pumps

There are at least two kids of auto switches for bilge pumps. The float switch which is the most common and a sealed electronic water sensor switch. Seems that the sealed switch would be more trouble-free, so to speak, as floats have track record of getting stuck, etc., probably mainly because of debris and poor maintenance.

Does anyone have the sealed electronic sensor and if so, what is your opinion of them? Just was wondering if you all have any comments about them.

Thanks!

Re: Auto switches for bilge pumps

nefferso, There is a third kind of "switch". Rule and other pumps have a circuit which runs the pump every two minutes to test for water. If the pump runs w/o load, it is shut off, since there is obviously no water. If the pump detects a load, the pump runs until there is no load, and then shuts off. My guess is that the pump senses water by the amount of current it takes to run the pump. More current = water.

Re: Auto switches for bilge pumps

I have had a small, self-contained pump/float switch assy (couldn't even tell you the brand) in my 23ft Celebrity & replaced it once in 18 years. That was due to a piece of nylon thread that came loose from the carpet & jammed up the PUMP. The float switch in these is highly reliable - the switch is inside the pump housing which acts as a debris barrier & maintenance is just squirting it off with a fresh water hose once in a while. I would highly recommend this type over any electronic sensor - especially in a bilge.

Re: Auto switches for bilge pumps

Chris, thanks! I know about the kind you mention. I decided not to go with that one as I don't particularly care to have a pump come on that often. Nothing wrong with them I am sure but just would rather have one of the other kinds.

Stevieray, thanks for your comments. I know there is an add-on float switch and some that are built-in and are part of the pump itself. The problem I have with the float switches is just what you mentioned. They can jam up with something and not work. I can't afford to have an auto switch not work when I need it. That is one reason I am thinking about going with the electronic sensor switch. Just was wondering if anyone out there has one and what has been their experience with them.

Thanks for both of your comments.
