A buddy of mine works at the local Oreilly Auto Parts. He said that I can find out the number on my thermostats, and I can cross reference them to an auto thermostat. Is this advisable? If so, I can get my t-stats for $10 cheaper.

O'Reilly might carry a line of outboard thermostats, but I'm pretty sure you won't cross one to an automotive thermostat.

I doubt any automotive thermostat will cross to that of an outboard. Automotive thermostats typcially are 195 degrees. They run an antifreeze mix in a 12 lb. pressure closed-cooling system. They burn cleaner and get best performance at that high temp. Thermostats in many outboards are around 140-145. A very few run slightly higher. They run much cooler temps. Outboards sound the overheat alarm just a few degrees above 195. You'll cook an outboard at consistent 195.

Theyr're also generally smaller than anything I've seen in a car.

Actually, I did find one, but I will have to see the specs tomorrow to determine the heat range. It fits in a John Deere of some year and model.

O'reilly does carry some marine parts, but be careful. I went there the other day to get a new canister for my fuel/water separator. the one they handed me was the wrong one even though they assured me it was. didn't even take it with me. Went to Wally world and got one.
