Im refurbishing my boat and had an idea about the bailing/bilge system. Would it work to put auto bailers from a sailboat into a motor boat? It may not be super practicle but It would be good to open up the bailers if it rained or took someones wake over the bow to drain the water out... Would it work or are they only designed for displacement hulls not planing hulls?

Thanks Fuzzey

on your boat, i believe a bilge pump is all that is necessary. your boat is not built to receive scuppers, that is the correct term.

Alright thanks, I wasn't sure if motor boats had them I have only seen them on sail boats before.

I think it will be a sponge and bucket for now :) mabey a bilge in if it takes on a lot of water...

Re: Automatic Bailers....For a motor boat?

I had a couple Super Shute Bailers on a Magabyte sailboat (think Laser on steroids...great little sailboat, BTW) which is a planing hull and they work really well. It's amazing how fast they will evacuate the water in the cockpit even when just puffing along, if you are on a reach you can hear them sucking water out like a little vacuum cleaner. As you probably already know there might be a couple of issues: 1) when they are in the closed position they sometime leak a little and let a little water in, and 2) they stick up above the floor a little and can be a trip hazard.

I don't know that they would be a good idea for a power boat as the "cockpit" is usually the whole boat and not just a small volume as is the case with sailboats I've seen these bailers on. They might want to swamp the boat when it is at rest...kind of like a different version of that movie "Speed"...stop and you sink!
