Automotive Power Steering Pump?

My power steering pump is leaking around the pulley shaft - bad enough that the system will be empty after a couple hours on the water.

I'm just curious if it would be acceptable to replace it with a new pump from a regular chevy 4.3L or if it needs to be a marine part.

Also, the pump is identified as being "metric". What does that refer to?

Thanks

A marine or automotive pump are the same.
Problem is - the out or pressure fitting - and
the return fitting on the pump must match your
old pump. If not you will have a problem installing pump and routing hoses. Take the pump
with you to auto parts dealer to match fittings
and hose angles. The pumps are all the same - but
they are 30 different hose arangements. Every power steering pump made in
the last 15 years has metric mounting bolts - marine or automotive.

You will have to remove the pump pulley, and put
in on new pump. Most auto stores will loan you
a puller, to do so. Air impack gun works great.
Have fun - Jerry

thanks for the info Jerry. I have another concern though. One of the local marine shops said the pump pressures are different for auto/marine pumps. Is that not anything to worry about?

an automotive pump will work, the pump does not
know if he is in a boat or car. You can buy a rebuilt auto pump for $45 - or a new merc for
$250 just try to match outlet and inlet to
make installing easy.
Remember the pulley removal.

Re: Automotive Power Steering Pump?

Appreciate the input. I ordered a pump from a marine salvage a couple weeks ago - didn't fit - the bolt holes for the bracket attachment were in different spots.

So I contacted a couple automotive parts stores and both were certain it could be easily matched up if I just bring it in.

Thanks

Re: Automotive Power Steering Pump?

Bought a reman. automotive pump and put my original OMC reservoir on it with all new seals. Works like a charm.
