if this has already been posted - i'm not surprised ;) and i wonder if good ole schematic is still around...

i just bought a jalopy to play with. the guy i got it from put a brand new carb on it, but didn't know much about adjusting it. its a mid 70's v8 with a 2barrel carb. after getting it home, i found that a flap in the breather was closed when running, once i disconnected that vacuum, it idled ok, and i didn't have to constantly rev it.

now the prob i would like to solve is how to correctly hook up an anti diesel solenoid . i am going to get a manual with schematics, but i was curious as to this thing. it was wired up, but adjusted back off the throttle. i adjusted it just up to the throttle, but with pwr, it gives fast idle, when actuated. that can't be right... ? it seems like it would actuate to open the throttle when the ign is turned off, but then where would it connect? it was cut/twisted on a hot off the coil...

just something to ponder... :D heck, i don't have to use it, just have never run into this before.

Re: automotive wiring question

Usually an anti diesel device is an electrical selenoid that is an integral part of a carburator. As the ignition is switched off, the selenoid shuts off the flow of fuel.
What you're describing is a throttle kicker. It's purpose is to raise idle a few hundred RPM when the AC compressor is engaged. The adjustment against the throttle is adjustable to achieve a smooth idle with the AC on, in gear, headlights on and steering at full lock.

Re: automotive wiring question

thanx SK. i was going on what i'd been told the solenoid was for... that sounds better, and makes sense... but - it never had A/C. i guess the replacement carb just came with that option. u da man

are you a harley wrench on the side, now? ;) :D

(amended)AH HAH! so i bet that means it should be hooked to the hot off coil, and be used to provide idle on this thing, without adjusting the stops screws... ok that idea might be a valid arg for more time playing with my new toy.

Re: automotive wiring question

It could be a replacement or used carb. If it idles fine without it, adjust it back out of the way.

The Sporty seems to eat up light bulbs. I put a Hayden M6 primary chain tentioner on it. Put some HD bag supports and soft bags on it.
It's been so stinking hot here lately, 100-110f, and I'm working 4/10s in it. That I've been driving the wifes air conditioned cager.

Caught my first Salmon (18#)of the year this morning. Only boat out at 4:30 AM. Caught it under an old Live Oak that had branches over the river. Had 4 Bald Eagles in the limbs, momma, pappa and 2 eaglets that had left the nest. It's 107f now, I'll be back out at 5pm.

Life is good.

daaaam - 18#'r good job! sheesh man i guess that tore out some drag. what a diff between there & here... well, i guess we can run into that situation when throwing a topwater for a 4# spotted bass and getting hitched to a 12# striper :D but i think i'd rather have a salmon that i can enjoy on the bbq :)

Re: automotive wiring question

ebb

The solenoid you describe is used for dual purposes, pending on your circumstance. As stated, it can be used for "idle up" for a/c or "anti-dieseling". If the engine has a tendency to run-on when shut off, simply wire the solenoid to either the ignition switch or the fed side of the ignition ballast resistor. Back out the throttle stop screw so that the throttle plates close tight in their bore. Then, adjust the throttle stop screw inward until the throttle plates "just" open. Now, with the solenoid energised, adjust the solenoid position until the engine idles appropriately. If its a GM product, the hex head of the solenoid plunger rotates to give you the adjustment...
