the lift up and down auxilary motor brackets, like those from Garelick, have always been rated by weight. Makes sense, but today I was informed by a bracket mfg (not Garelick) that 2 stroke or 4 stroke also makes a difference in the bracket design EVEN IF THE MOTORS ARE THE SAME WEIGHT because the 4 strokes have more stressfull torque on the bracket. I cant see how if two 9.9 motors weigh the same,, one will need a much beefier bracket**** Is this true??

"today I was informed"

Was it the janitor, the receptionist, the kid at the tech. svc. dept. that just started yesterday, the TS guy in India (China), or the VP of Science & Technology?

Customer Service today is dead. Nobody knows what they are talking about, and even fewer could care less.

Call them back and ask the same question, then ask for sound reasons. Sounds like BS to me.

The Sales Mrg's responsibility is to sell new units.

If you have an existing bracket rated for weight and you buy a new 4-stroke motor that still fell within the weight rating, there would be no need to buy a new one.

All companies need new sales to survive. Call back again and ask him for the Engineering updates that made the 4-stroke bracket necessary.

I've been looking at kicker brackets for my Sylvan and seen this difference mentioned on different brackets. Makes no sense to me either, 2 vs. 4 stroke except a 4 stroke of the same horsepower as a 2 stroke weighs more than. This is the only difference I can account for. If a 4 stroke falls within the brackets weight and horsepower limits I don't understand why it won't work.

neither do I, which is why I posted the question. It's very strange and when I asked I was told that a 4 st of the same weight and power will torque the bracket more. Personally, I dont buy it, but, as you found out, ALL the bracket mfgs make the same claim.

Re: aux motor bracket ratings

Back when I installed a 9.9 kicker on the back of a 115 hp powered 21 footer I had a choise between 2 types of brackets. One rated for 9.9 and another for 20hp. I choosed the 20 hp model and was never sorry that I did considering the little difference in price. Turned out I often had to let the kicker drop from the UP position to the down running position and I was happy the extra strenght could take the beating.

I found this one on EBay last year, and purchased it. Its all SS, and is the wide bracket style. I had a 7.5HP older merc on it, and its rated at 88lbs, with 12 inch travel. It worked great, but I sold the boat and the buyer wanted it and paid me an extra $100 to leave it on. I just purchased another one from the same place, but its up $20 from last year. There is one catch, Its made in China.
