2004 Johnson 50HP - 4stroke. The motor is installed high on the transom so that the anti cavitation plate is just above the surface at plaining speed. There is a water intake hole "auxiliary water inlet screen" on the underside of the cavitation plate. The manual says to change this out with P/N 5031618 if the cavitation plate is above water level. I was wondering if the replacement part is just a blocked inlet screen or is it a shaped so that it can take in water.... a tube attachment maybe?

I was thinking if it's just a blocked screen then I could make something to fit.

Well, the part description is "cover, water tube." It's a $4.95 part at ishopmarine.com. I think that, if it were me, I'd buy the part and install it.
