My rig: 2002 Monark King 170
2003 Merc 90HP 13x19 prop
35MPH (GPS)
5200 RPM

I've seen dozens of posts suggesting the AV plate needs to be at or 1-2 inches of the transom.

When looking at my motor, there are 2 plates. The AV plate just above the prop which goes completely around the shaft. 2-3 inches above that, there's another plate which only goes around the front half of the shaft.

What's that higher plate called?

When my motor is trimmed all the way down, it's the upper of the two plates thats even with the keel of the boat.

Is the motor mounted too low? It came from the dealer this way, so one would think that the motor is mounted correctly.

Thanks...

Re: AV plate height question

That's to keep the water from splashing up.

It depends on the motor. Smaller motors with exhaust behind the prop instead of thru the prop need the AV plate well below the hull.

The AV plate is the lower plate and according to your description, its way too low. I have an Alumacraft Navigator 165CS and my engine is mounted three holes up.

It sounds like it is definitely mounted too low; just because the dealer mounted it that way doesn't mean anything. Most boats come from the dealer with a general setting that isn't really what is best for the boat.
