Avalanche leaking under dash...

I have an '02 Avalanche that started leaking under the dash during some heavy rain storms over the past week or two. I have tried to find the leak and I can't get under the dash enough to see it.

I had the windsheild replaced last winter, so my first thought was they didn't seal it correctly. Friends seem to think it may be a vent.

Any suggestions? I'm out of warrantee so I really didn't want to have to take it to the dealership or to a garage.

Most glass shops warranty the work if it is the glass. Around here (in the Chevrolet Dealership where I work) we have a "Water Doctor" who can search out leaks and fix them.

Check with a body shop and find out if they know where the drains are loacted they might be clogged up.

I will ask my body shop people tomorrow too.

Bob

Here's the scoop from my body shop people...

If you have a sunroof there are drains that drain the water down and out via the front door pillars... if they clog you have a back-up and a leak.

The firewall seam can be leaking - doubtful unless you have had bodywork.

and the number one answer is your windshield. Glass company did not properly install with the gasket cement and with the recent weather changes it is starting to leak. The body shop said this is where they would start and contact the installer to have it resealed even if they have to pay for a new windshiels and do it right.

hope it helps.

Bob

you may also want to check and see that it is not the AC condensation run-off ;)

No sunroof, so that's out.

No body work (that I know of since I bought it used in November) so that's probably out.

So...I guess I call the glass company!

Thanks for the help Bob!!

Vlad, I am certain it's not the AC...there is a bit of condensation there, but nothing like the puddle I get after a storm...I know it is a leak. :(

Any large dealer has ultrasound leak detecting equipment. It is VERY accurate.

Possibly the seal between the firewall and the air treatment box as well. Remove the panel infront of the glass and make sure there is no leaf dams holding water against the hearter box inlet. then use a hose to run water around the box inlet and check inside for water.
