What's the deal dolluper? I am already using Avast 4.8, free home addition. Why is your upgrade link to 5.0 such a good deal. Is it no longer free?

Is Avast free edition better than AVG free edition?

Re: Avast free 4.8 to 5.0 more

How does it compare in regard to running all sorts of crap in the background. I used to use AVG free, but the current version is ridiculous. My main machine is a dual core, which runs at nearly 3 gig and has 2 gig of memory. I tried the latest AVG and every time I tried to edit photos, I couldn't scroll through them easily, because the program seemed to be scanning each for "nasties." I got rid of it and everything went back to normal.

This is the same reason that I won't use Norton. It seems like all the antivirus vendors are designing programs that will kill your productivity, unless you have absolutle huge amounts of memory.

I ran both ...4sure AVG was just bloat and missed lots of bad stuff that avast caught....Now with the antispyware it's a bit slower but updates fast and runs much smoother than AVG....you could always run the 4.8 without the antispyware ,it runs real fast......bigger drives take longer

I read somewhere that Avast! did a better job of finding viruses and other junk in a side-by-side test than AVG did. I've used both, and both work fine for me. AVG doesn't choke up your machine unless its SLOOOOWWWW. I would recommend either. And both are free.

Avast is trying to get as slow as AVG but still quicker even with the antispyware....much faster and smoother updates with Avast

Guy....
Try Microsoft Security Essential. Google it and it will walk you on how to install it. It is very good and I have been using it since it came out. The footprint is very small and does not slow anything down. Does the virus definition update all by itself and you don't have to worry about it at all.

Re: Avast free 4.8 to 5.0 more

I loaded that Microsoft Security Essentials and set it to scan everyday at the same time.It was still scanning from the day before when it became time to start the new scan.I uninstalled it and reactivated AVG.I am running a 2.8 P4/1gb/500gb.
AVG takes about 7 hours more or less to complete its scan.It finds cookies etc so nothing is disabled.I uninstalled Ad-Aware and Spybot some time ago.Everything that loads when you boot up can slow your system down and just about everything that is free will somehow have a footprint somewhere as long as your system is running.AVG pretty much has all the bases covered in my estimation.I do have some reservations about the latest version however, you cannot disable it temporarily for whatever reason, such as when installing new software so I may be looking for a replacement in the near future.Ron G

Try Comodo. I retired Avast for this one and it is also free.
