hi guys I have a 1973 22 mako with two 1998 90 hp Johnson’s 2 stroke on it. Had it out yeasterday with me my wife and her dad and got it up to 33 mph also full tank of gas. Just wondering if any body had any idea if this was average for the top speed ?

Seems slow

What RPMs were you running?

Were you trimmed out properly?

With that boat and twin 90s, if you are really doing 33 MPH that is good. Twin engines are slower due to extra prop and lower unit drag and the additional weight than a similar horsepower equivalent single and less fuel efficient as well. The old Makos are solid, heavy, respected offshore boats and worth owning if well tended to or restored. But a 22 foot Mako with only 180 horsepower on tap and twins at that, 33 MPH sounds outstanding!

Rpms were around 4,500 and trim was all the way down on plane. Is that the right way to trim ?

Oh man I didn’t know my trim was wrong. So you trim up when your on plane and this will give more power and less drag lol damn

Yep. Once on plane trim the drives out (up) until it porpoises. Then tuck them in (down) until that condition stops. This assumes using the trim on the outboards.

I think your a tad slow but I wouldn’t expect more than 35 mph with only 180 HP bolted on the transom
