Let me start by saying Im learning so much about the outboards everyday I sit in the garage and just go at it. Just picked up the 1998 Force 90hp for $500. Fantastic condition under the hood. So I spent all day Sunday scrapping the wire harness from the control box as I want to install key ignition in the dash and the controls have a broken shifting arm. Also diagnosed a bad fuse on the block ( wasn't blown just corroded.)but wasn't getting power to the harness. I duck taped the neutral switch in the ignition so I can turn the key and get power to the starter. Also choke is activating.

Removed the carbs for cleaning and they were filled with crap. going to disassemble and soak. The parts inside look good, Im going to just order new gasket set, and reassemble.

Also when I was running through my wiring I noticed that the yellow wires coming from the stator are fried but still getting spark on all cylinders. I was reading the guys thread with this same problem and he redid it with a connector block to hold a heavier load. Although Im wanting to know if stator is good beside fixing the wiring.

The two yellow wires are used for charging the battery. Very common to see these wires burnt right next to the OEM "bullet" connectors on the 1996 - 1998 motors. Disconnect the two yellow wires that go to the stator and measure across them with an OHM meter. You should read about .5 to .7 ohms. Hard to read with the old analog type meter with a needle. Easier with a digital meter. To check the other winding in the stator that supplies voltage to the CDM's (coil packs), disconnect the two Green/White and White/Green wires that go to the stator and measure across them. You should see 500 to 700 OHMs. If everything measures OK, you should be good to go.

Okey guys im looking for a little advice. with the motor turning by the key and up on a stand I ran another compression test and have one cylinder about 20lbs of from the others. cylinder 1 - 120lbs cylinder 2- 140lbs cylinder 3 - 140lbs. Im thinking that even though theres more than 20lbs diference its still over 120lbs so will this make performance issues? before I go any further into the awakening I want to be sure it will run.

20 LBS difference is not that much out of tolerance. 14 LBS is normal max. out of tolerance for 140 LBS. It should run fine. I would fire it up and check the compression after it's warmed up. May be that the rings on that cylinder need to be freed up after sitting for a while.

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest that you also replace the fuel pump diaphragm and water pump impeller. These are show stoppers if they fail. Bad fuel pump diaphragm will not supply enough fuel to the motor. Best case scenario, motor doesn't well or doesn't run at WOT. Worse case scenario, motor runs at WOT but is too lean and melts a piston. Pretty common with outboards. Bad water pump impeller will overheat the motor which can also ruin it.

One other thing, if the neutral safety switch is by-passed, be very careful when starting the motor. If the motor is in gear, that spinning propeller will do some serious damage to the human body in seconds flat. You can check to see if it's in gear by just turning the propeller by hand (with the motor off of course). If the prop spins with little or no effort, then it's in neutral. If it moves a little then stops, it's in gear.

Re: Awakening 1998 90 hp Force

wow. i got the motor turn key. After carbs rebuild, fuel pump rebuild, water pump rebuild, all new lines, and plugs.. two or three cranks and she was sitting there idleing for a half hour. shifts in all gears nice and smoothly

Im ready to paint I already cleaned really good and sanded the whole motor. Not looking for the best paint job just something to make it look good. Has anyone used the mercury spray paint? or what other options? I want a a hard paint that will dry fast. Maybe auto grade. Im going to spray zinc chromate this weekend

After running, did the comp go back up?
Mercury makes a product called powertune.
It's a de-carb.Works great on loosining the carbon on the rings.
Mercury's paint is a bit pricey.
Find a color you like at Wally World.
Don't paint if there is a cloud aywhere in the state.
Get the motor warm.Then paint.
Zinc cromate??My opinion,not needed.J
