Well I did research all day today and came to teh conclusion the striaght 30w SAE would be best for my 1990 merc 3.0. on the way home I picked up 5 quarts of penzoil hd 30w, and a fram oil filter ( ph 30 ) , went home drained my motor, filled it back up took all five quarts, then went to put the fill cap back on and noticed that it said to use SAE 10w 30. My question, did I go wrong with the striaght 30w, do I need to redo my oil change? also how much gl5 does and alpha one normally take? teh stuf fhtat came out of it was pretty dark almost black, and had a tiny bit of metal shaving in it, is this normal?
THanks guys,
THomas

Not sure about the other questions, but the reason straight 30 weight is used is you're not gonna go boating on ice. Multi-vis is used for cars because the temps are more extreme than on the water. You'll be fine.

I run Mobil1, 15W50 in my motor... Use Whatever you'd like... 30W isn't all bad.. I wouldn't change it till it's due.....

Alpha1s take just over a qt... I run Mobil1, or Valvoline 75W90 Syn. in mine..... Black is better than Milky... Metal Dust is somewhat Normal... Metal Chips are Not....

champian has good plugs, I go to a reputable motor parts store for the conversion. I'll double check for your heat range, 30w oil is a little too muck for your engine, unless you run it warm. Metal in oil, especially a 1990 is not normal, something is not right there. metal is normal in a brand new motor, then after frequent changes, just used oil. Are you the one with the soft spot in the floor, looking for fiber fill?
