axle strength

I got my boat weighted today, something I have wanted to do. I knew i had too little tongue weight, so I moved the wheels back one hole just last week... I have a 1985 invader, the boat and trailer is 2800 lbs. Weight of trailer and boat on the car (with car off the scale) is 2600. 200 lbs of tongue weight, which is about perfect. So i assume the boat is about 2200.. maybe 2100, the trailer being 400/500 lbs

My question is, will my trailer axle be rated for 2200 lbs? I looked on princess auto's website and anything around my length (72 inches) is rated for 3500 lbs.

I never travel far to the launch, was thinking of going about 200 kms to a friends cottage this weekend.

what do you guys think?

Re: axle strength

measurments mean nothing AT ALL for capacity of axle...

is this a round tube axle or a square tube axle? either way whats the o.d. of the axle itself?

Re: axle strength

sorry didnt catch the pictures on 1st post..i work at a trailer shop and never heard or had to order a 2x1.5" and none of my books show those axles only 2x2 those usually run 2000# or 3500# so were kinda guessing still unless u were to pull hubs apart and get dimensions (o.d) on spindle or even bearing numbersfor 100% accuracy BUT what size tires are on this 13,14,15" this is bout the easiest and quickest way to determine the capacity of this axle? or look at reg but i know alot of people downrate there reg so still guessing.

Re: axle strength

the reg does not say that stuff in canada... it has 13 inch tires on it, 4x100.

measuring the outside diameter of the spindle, on the inside of the hub(right at the seal) its 1.5 inches.

Re: axle strength

If the bearings are 1-1/16 both inner and outer you have a 2000 - 2200# axle. If the bearings are 1-1/16 outer and 1-3/8 inner you have a 3500# axle. That is just one parameter however. Springs need to be 1750# rated (each) for 3500#. Obvisously the tires also need to be rated for a minimum of 1750# each for a 3500# axle or about 1100# each for a 2200# axle. Tires, springs, and axle determine the maximum weight a trailer can carry (including the weight of the trailer frame itself).

Re: axle strength

I had an old square axle like that on my trailer. It had weird spindles on it. Finding bearings and seals was a huge pain. I ended up getting a nice new 3000lbs one from tractor supply for like $130 ready to go with hubs. Couldn't be happier and changing it out was a breeze.

ya I want to get a new one anyways.. the problem is here in canada its $199 for the axle from princess auto, with no spindles or bearings... might look in south carolina when I go.

I had a square one like that too, had problems with the metal cracking where the spindles were welded in on both sides. Cheapest I could find somebody to weld it was about $100. Bought a new one complete with hubs, bearings..... (3500lb) from ABCTrailerparts.com for $109, can get new springs for another $20. Not sure how shipping to Ontario works though.

Standens in Calgary will sell a complete 3500lbs kit built to your specs. for under $250.00 with GST included. ( by complete is everything except the tires and the price of them from them is better than Princess auto when there have them on sale.) They have a outlet in Toronto.

I picked one up for a pontoon trailer I made.
