we hope to soon be able to trailer our boat on trips which will cover thousands of miles .... for folks who tow distances, do you have any apprehension about doing so with a single axle trailer

Nope - as long as it is rated for the weight you are towing and the bearing are adjusted and have grease it is no different than any other dead axle you would have on a car/truck.
