! of my engines shifts very hard, forward and reverse. Is there a way to know for certain if the shift cable is the culprit. Shifts pretty smoothly if I push the neutral button.

Re: B3 shift cable

When you push the neutral button, it's throttle only and doesn't shift.

Disconnect the helm cable from the engine shift plate. Have someone hold resistance to movement of the cable and move the shifter. If it's still stiff, then you need a new cable. If you can't notice the resistance, the problem is either the lower shift cable or the drive.
Pull the drive and move the shift cable, it should move very easily. If it takes more than 1 finger and thumb with light pressure to move the cable, replace it.

Thank you for the reply. Another issue with this shifter, is that the motor will lose RPM's at most settings. So I tightened down on the friction adjustment so it will hold. This is adding to my stiffness problem. What is the best way to proceed with this issue? Thanks

You could also have "shift linkage" issues in the upper. The detent assembly blows apart & now is putting more pressure on the shift arm than it needs. Check that cavity for water in the driveshaft hsg. If there is water, replace cable, detent & linkage assembly. Use special lube 101 on the detent assembly! You'll need a drive mount set, back cover o-ring & top cover o-ring. 2quarts of hi-perf too!
