20130809 150800 - YouTube I could be wrong... but i'm pretty sure this ain't normal. Water this was NOT under pressure, i simply put a bucket of water on my poling platform and siphoned water into the pisser outlet... this is what it looked like. Motor is running hott which is why I have it apart, impeller was perfect when I got to the water pump so I tried a backflush and i noticed this.

Pretty sure no one here or anywhere has ever tried what you did there so its kind of hard to tell if its "normal" in that situation or not.

I got the idea to backflush the motor on this forum so i'm sure someonehere has done this before, it was overheating and thought something might be blocking a cooling passage so i backflushed it. I assumed the water would just come out the copper pipe but obviously didn't

The telltale is plumbed to the cylinder head water jacket. Most IL merc motors are open circuit. The impeller pumps the water into the powerhead, it cools the exhaust plate, cylinders, head and then drains into the lower unit. So what I see is normal. what you want to do is put the hose on the copper pipe and see if the water flows easilu thru the motor. The impeller only has 5-7 PSi at max, so use low water pressure. What kind of motor?

I will give that a shot, the motor is a 1992 mercury classic 40, inline 4. It started giving me overheating problems after I ran it shallow one day, figured I sucked up some sand, hence the back flush. Water pump looked good but at $80 its cheap insurance I just ordered the whole rebuild kit because there was quite a bit of sand everywhere. I flushed about a cubic inch of sand out of the motor backwards but nothing drastic. Plan on taking off the exhaust cover and cleaning out the cooling channels as best I can. One question though the exhaust tube that is in the lower leg... is it supposed to be seated in the bottom of the powerhead? because when i removed the lower unit it came sliding down, it won't slide out because of the lip on it, but its got 6" back and forth of play, does the pressure from the lower unit force it to seat itself or what?

well i flushed it thru the copper tube up into the motor via garden hose, i just barely cracked it because I know i want low pressure. No sand out of the tell tale (coffee filter) I guess I need to hook up the hose and fire it up with the temp gauge attached and see what I get, that SHOULD tell me if I have a blocked cooling passage correct? I've been hitting the bolts on the cylinder cover for 4 days straight with pb blaster, couple times a day I spray them then tap them with a hammer, hoping that in the event that cover has to come off by the time I do it I won't break bolts
