bad carbs??

I have a mercury 650 65 hp. i noticed awhile ago that when i put the engine in the up position, about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of fuel leaked out from the front of the engine(it looked like out from the carbs). it wasn't really a problem when the engine was in the running position until today. i was out on the lake and the engine started losing power until it stalled. when i took a look, it appeared that fuel was pouring out from the carbs so i figured that it flooded. the only way i could get the engine going again was pretty much to open the throttle all the way or else it would stall out again. my question is...does this sound like a carb problem? and if so does it sound like they just need a good cleaning or to be completely replaced. i thank you for any suggestions. the serial # on this engine is 4044522. thanks again.

TDP , Sounds like sticky or defective floats in carb bowls.I would recommend installing new carb kits. They can be got through dealer or online.if you are going to tackle the job yourself I recommend using an engine manual for a guide. Here's one online place to order carb kits for your engine. web page

I'm sure others with more experience and knowledge of your particular motor will have much to add but ... it sounds to me like you should be looking at cleaning the carbs and installing new gaskets and floats.

If it is leaking as bad as it sounds in your description, something is definitely sticking (ie a float), loose (ie fuel line to carb or carb itself), plugged (ie carb jet gummed up), or a combination of the above.

I'd start by getting a carb kit for each carb (basically installing new gaskets and a float) and very carefully cleaning each carb getting rid of any accumulated gunk. If you don't have one, get a manual as it will take you step by step through the process.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Cheers,

Brew

thanks alot for the help guys. i figured that they might need a new kit, i just hope that solves the problem. I just got the carbs out which was a bit more involved then i thought, and they actually don't look too bad, so i'm gonna go on that site you gave me and order kits. thanks again for your help.

Tony

TDP also get a gallon of carb cleaner and let the parts soak over night. Then if you have an air source available blow out all orfices in the carb. Before you soak the carbs or spray them remove the needle and seats, best to replace them, some seats are rubber and if sprayed or soaked with carb cleaner they deteriorate and malfunction. Lioke everybody else recommend a good manual in hand before starting.
Good Luck

Be careful with soaking your carbs overnight if they are made of plastic. I've heard that the carb cleaner can also deteriorate plastic if left in it long enough. If they are plastic, I'd go with an aerosol carb cleaner followed by blowing out the passages with compressed air.

Good luck!
