Bad clutch dog?

I have a 1961 Evinrude Fastwin, 18 hp, that I just got a couple of months ago. The first 3 trips I took it on, it ran great. The problem I have now is that it runs at about a quarter thrust and then the prop disengages and the motor races. The clutch dog was replaced right before I got it and I have taken the foot apart and visually checked the gears and the clutch dog and all looked good. It still pulls in reverse, so I have already turned the clutch dog around backwards. Same result. Someone told me that it might be the bushing in the prop so I replaced the prop. Still no difference. I have adjusted the rods that shift it into forward and reverse to give them longer throws, still the same thing. Any ideas? I am very frustrated and am having a hard time not just dropping it off the back of the boat:)

Re: Bad clutch dog?

First welcome to Iboats<br />When it does this is there a good thunk from the lower unit? If not I would look else where for the problem. When a clutch dog starts to fail it will jump out and back into gear. Some have said they thought the engine was going to jump off the back of the boat when it happens. Spun prop would come to mind, put a mar on the prop hub with a permanent marker, on the inside across the hub, bushing and prop. then out it back on and run it, when it slips, remove it and look at the mark. If its still lined up, its good, if not its bad.

Re: Bad clutch dog?

Thanks for you help. I have already replaced the prop, and on the Fastwin, there is a sheer pin that is also in place that hasn't broken. When I throttle back after it races up, it will catch again. That was why I was thinking clutch dog. I know less about outboards than I do most everything else, I imagine that is already evident. I will try the mark, but I have a hard time thinking the new prop is bad? It has only been run one time to see if it had fixed the problem and it didn't.
