bad coil power supply

I have a 1987 OMC 2.7 Sea Drive. I recently found one of the 12 volt leads from the power pack to the coil was disconnected. The end had corroded & fallen off. When I tried to repair it I noticed the copper wire inside the insulation was heavily corroded. My question is can I cut the coil leads near the power pack & install new wire to the coils. If so any particulars I may need to know about? Thanks for any help.

Sure,if you need additional wire ,get a piece of same size,I highly suggest you get shrink wrap or liquid neoprene to cover the splice, you can get standard butt connectors at the hardware store, some have shrink wrap on them.I find them to be too$$$ and the liquid neo.is easy to add more if necessary. While your at it check them all. Those seadrives are prone to get water inside the cowling,in fact they even have a device that connects to the tell tale to eject water(by the way ,those things get dirty and will flood you worse)I am suprised the wire you mentioned didnt terminate at a plug with all the other coil wires, perhaps over the yrs there was a change. As I said ,prone to electrical connector troubles./

Thanks for your help. I have used the shrink wrap connectors & you are correct. They get expensive. I will try the liquid neo. I am not the original owner but I have found some splices under the power pack. sea drive can get very wet inside if your not careful when backing down on throttle.
