I got the boat in the water today. It was running great until I shut it down for a few minute to go under a bridge by paddle with the stern drive up. I put the drive back down to the trim up position (shallow waters) then started the engine and when I shifted into drive I got a loud clunking noise. It reminded me of the sound of a bad u joint on a car. Is that what I'm looking at and how hard is it to change them?

The first thing you need to do is pull the drive and see what the problem is, replacing ujoints is a bit of work, but fixing "why" they went bad and finding out what caused the problem may take even more work.

The boat is a 1987 and I would guess they have near been replaced or greased:mad: I also talked to my wife last night and when she started it yesterday and put it in the trim was in the trailer position. And come to find out well out yesterday I was leaking power steering fluid from the a hose and it was landing near the transom. It is getting cold so I will not be getting the boat out again this season. I plan to pull it apart, change the hose and clean everything up.
