I have a 26 footer with twin 260 mercs. They start hard after sitting a week or so, then they start fine. also after a long trip the crankcase seems to fill with gas. Why?

Re: Bad fuel economy

Are you talking about both engines hard starting and the crankcases filling with gas?
How much gas is in the crankcase for each engine, does the oil level on the dipsticks go up a quart? Are you certain it is gas and not water?
If it is gas and only on one engine time for a carb rebuild. Otherwise have you changed anything on the engines before this started.

Both engines go up about a quart, and it's gas. I've been told on older carbs that the maching plugs can leak? I've also been told that the fuel pump diaphram can leak gas in to the block? Is that true

Re: Bad fuel economy

i have a boat with twin mercruiser 220hp and i have the same trouble with starting them. if they sit for any period of time (week of so), they start hard. after fishing all day long, they will start up fine at the end of the day? i don't know if that is something with mercruiser motors or what? i also have a smaller boat with a yamaha 225 outboard and that thing can sit for weeks on end and will start up no problems. can't go wrong with a yamaha. YAMAHA YAMAHA YAMAHA!!!!!!

i haven't noticed anything with the crankcase filling up though. that's weird that you say that you have the same trouble starting them after sitting for a while.

side note: with your motor (i know depending on conditions and stuff) what have you found to be the most effecient cruise speed? or maybe at what rpm's do you cruise at?

Ya, know it has been so long since I have seen this problem I forgot about the pump leaking inside instead of out the weep hole. Have you also checked the bilge area for gas?
Yes, the pump can bypass the inner seal and leak into the engine.

What year engines, what type of Carbs?

You have changed the gassy oil, right ?

Do the engines idle smoothly and run at speed smoothly? If it is flooding through the carb, that much gas should make the engine run poorly, smoke, etc.

How long of a trip 1hr, 8hr, full speed or 3/8 throttle?

Pull a spark plug from each engine, are they black and sooty ? Time for a carb rebuild, but use marine carb kits.

If the plugs look normal (grayish) replace the fuel pumps, but this is wierd why both engines at the same time or did one do it and the other started shortly after.

Yes, the machining plugs can leak, but in my experience they will cause vaccuum leaks resulting in poor idle but not excessive gas.

The poor starting (after sitting) may be attributed to a leaking or bad accelerator pump on the carb requiring you to pump the throttle after cranking or crank for extended periods until the engine receives enough gas to start.

Let me know what you find.
