Hi,A friend of mine gave me a 1975 6hp Johnson seahorse model 6R75 which likely has not been run for over 3years. I got the thing to start, but after about idling for 3-4 minutes, it began to over heat and smoke. The block was too hot to touch. I quickly shut it down.

I looked for a pee hole, but couldn't find one. i have the following questions.
1. How can I tell if the impeller is working?
2. Where is the cooling exhaust water expelled?
3. Could there be another problem other than the impeller?
4. The mounting bolts on the mounting bracket are frozen. How can I unfreeze them?

Would appreciate any help I can get.

About halfway down the leg of the motor there is a hole about the size of a nickel that's angled downward and back. This is the exhaust relief / water discharge port. Water should be spraying out of this hole continuously when the motor is running. Bad impeller is a good bet. Good luck.

If it is that hot, don't run it. Replace the impeller or the entire water pump before using. Drop the LU and it's easy to do.
