Second time in a month microsoft invades my 'puter in the night to install some "update'.

Second time my 'puter wakes up broke.:mad:

Second time restoring to last week fixed it.

Is there a way, other than turning the thing off, that I can prevent these uninvited "updates" that turn my 'puter into the slug of all times?:(:(

Yes there is a way to block off all updates, go to control panel - open security center - then turn off auto updates. This is on vista, I think XP is similar.

Gees, I feel your pain.....I turned off Automatic Updates a long time ago. I figure waiting to see what others run into before I allow any updates is the way to go. Since auto updating is turned off, when I do go to MS to 'look' at the available updates, I NEVER do an Express install , always Custom. In custom install, you'll see what the Updater was going to d/l into your box. I pick security updates etc that I havn't heard are causing any issues.

Cutting to the Chase (one option):

Click Start, Control Panel, Security Center....uncheck Automatic Updates. Ignore the blurbs about your computer going critical mass and wiping out the known universe if it's turned off.

...or you could go to the Security Center and tell it to notify you of the updates. That way you know they are there but you can pick and choose which ones you want to download.

.....or you could be a 'correct' steward of your environment and turn your computer off at nite.:p

Turn the darn thing off when not in use JB. I don't know why people leave their home puter on when not using. It's like locking your door but leaving the window open while you're not at home. A properly configured puter that only load up the neccessary processes takes no time to boot up.

My virus scans run at night; my backups run at night (what there is of them); my ad scans run at night. It's also my alarm clock. Need any more reasons? Oh yea, I get updates at night.:D

Thanks, Kewl one. I have forbid automatic updates. I will let them notify me, then ignore them. :)

Did it again last night. :( last time :).

I leave my 'puter on all the time because of the automatic notification of reported posts and PMs. TD usually beats me to them, but I wanna know when that happens. If I am going out of town for a while I do turn her off.

On call 24/7 it's a brave new world.

Old days if off, you didn't pick up the phone when it rang, ha.

Assuming XP, right click on My Computer - click on properties - then the Automatic Updates Tab.
This is where you can change the setting.
I prefer to download updates only.
I have not had a problem with any of the basic updates.
I have had problems with custom updates (which I never do)...usually the result of a driver update.
