Bad motor, replacement option questions...

So, I bought a boat with a blown 1992 60hp Mariner. I would like to buy a used motor to replace the bad one, but have run into trouble. I was told by someone that an 85hp mercury would fit, so I bought one, and it didn't. The mount onto the boat runs into the motor when lowered.

Here is my question: I would prefer not to change out the motor mount on the transom. I've tried to find another 60hp mariner, but they seem to be hard to find. Are there any other brands that would fit the current motor mount and tilt/trim?

Second question: There is a place I found on the internet that will rebuild the current mariner for 1300 dollars. Would it be worth doing this, or should I just search for a new motor?

Thanks for the help!

Do you have the mount for the merc and if so, what is behind your reluctance to use it?

welcome to iboats?

I have the mount, but I don't have the tilt/trim. The tilt/trim has two connectors instead of one, so I really don't want to mess with it. i'll also have to do some rewiring. But i'm open to suggestions.....

I think he is trying to put a Merc motor on a Mariner transom bracket?
Why not just pull the 4 transom bolts and put the new motor on?I take it the good motor has no tilt and trim...You could put an aftermarket TnT on it for way less than having that Mariner rebuilt.

I don't want to pull the transom bolts because I don't want to drill new holes in the boat for the bracket that came with the mercury. the mariner bracket actually already has tilt and trim, so I was hoping I could use that.

So I guess my basic question is this: Is there another brand of motor that will fit the mariner mount? If not, what is amotor/bracket combo that is reliable, and popular enough that I wouldn't have a problem finding a replacement motor for later if I needed it, without having to replace the bracket again?

What year is the 85?? The last year merc made a 85 was 1977...and its a 4 cylinder, yours is a 51.8 cid 3 cylinder. Just have it rebuilt as these are real good engines..:D
