My helper that is 18 years old is learning the ropes of the HVAC/commercial kitchen equipment repair. He has really been doing well in picking up the skills needed. Cudos to him, but............

This past Wednesday he went to the Cuyahoga fair to race his quad and then was to race Thursday at our local county fair. To put it short, he won his first race which is the first time he has ever finished first. During his second race he crashed. He broke his right hand thumb and broke his jaw in 2 places. Ben is a fine young man and I am proud to be his immediate boss. I have prayed for a speedy recovery as he is to start his tech school at the end of the month. I'm just not sure on how well he will have use of his hand afterwards. A skill that requires the use of ones hands is important. He is 18 and I know he wil heal quickly.

BTW, two years ago he was hit broad side by a speeding car while crossing a road on his quad. He recovered quickly from that accident. I hope that he does the same this time as well.

A few thoughts and prayers for Ben would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.SS

Take him to the second hand shop....

That was mean!!

I feel for the guy and wish him a speedy recovery. I also recognize that racing is dangerous and he knew the risks going in. I have known several people who have injured themselves in racing accidents.

I feel real bad for him,,,he can't talk due to his mouth being wired shut,,, and now he can't text due to his right hand being in a cast.

So far, he has undergone 3 surgries in the past 4 days. I can't even imagine how he is dealing with it. I know his mom and pop is taking this hard. If I was them, the quad would go bye bye......

I am sorry but can't text for a teenager is similar to a near death experience!

When we were 18 ........ text was printed in a book. I suggest you just give him support and buy him a few text manuals to learn from.

Here's hoping for a quick recovery!

Being his boss and him in his current condition, should ease any worries of 'biting the hand that feeds you' ;):D

Hope all goes well with his recovery.
Now, that being said... After two serious accidents on the quad, perhaps SS can get him into boats instead.:D

Hope he recovers o.k., I'm in the Hvac/refrigeration field also, had my left wrist fused solid some years ago at the cleveland clinic.I can rotate it but not flex it at all. Took a little time, but you adjust to these things and modify how you work slightly. hopefully he will have full use of the thumb, and jaw too. Next for me will be partial knee replacements, will be interesting.

hate to hear if his injuries. i have no idea what i would do if Branden was layed up. he carried the load here, for serveral weeks, when i was ill.

he is now as good J/E tech as i am. i gave him 49% of the business, as he proved himself. i can't afford to loose him to someone else.

don't give up on him yet SS. I was let go from a job years ago because I had broken my hand. we rebuilt machines and needed both hands as well. in hind sight it was the best thing for me as I went to school and got a degree but the point is my hand healed up just fine and is 100% usable. The worst part for me about breaking the hand was being let go from a job I really enjoyed. don't make it worse for the young gun. he'll heal up.

I'm not giving up on him and actually I can't since he is one of the boss's son. :D. At my other job I had before this one, I had hired a guy that had his big toe implanted on his hand. He had lost his thumb and 2 fingers in a material mixer. I met him through a friend and saw him use his hand. He was able to work well with it.

So yes, I will keep the spot open for him as he is a decent young man. Seems like it is hard to find them now days, but they are out there. They just need to be found and given a chance.

I know of 8 people who were killed just watching a race...2 days ago.
Its one of the only sports thats kills people who don't even do it.

Re: Bad News On My Helper

I doubt he will sell his quad, if racing is in his blood. Once the racing bug bites, its impossible to remove. I've been riding and racing MX for over 20 years. And from my experience, its not "if" you crash.... its "when and how bad". Also from my experience, stay away from fair tracks.... temporary tracks are not well thought out or well built and your asking for problems.
