We have a 1966 Starcraft Holiday V with the original MerCruiser 110hp 4-cyl motor and I/O outdrive. When we start the motor with the muffs on and the outdrive fully down it sounds normal, and pumps water fine, but if we bring the outdrive tilt up while it's running, about 1/3 of the way up it starts making a horrible "clacking" noise like gears are grinding. Outdrive is in neutral. Noise is definitely coming from the outdrive, not the engine. Any comments on what it could be and what to look for?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Like Ted said, it's the u-joints, Protestin' the extreme angles....

Don't do that,... on the wagon, nor in the water....
Stay lower that the point it makes noise,...

Probably oughta pull the drive, 'n inspect 'em...

Even when the drive is in neutral everything is spinning except some of the lower drive parts. Don't raise the drive that much when the engine is running.
