I just bought an 1989 VIP I/O with a OMC outdrive and contols. I noticed after buying it that the nuetral lever on the back side of the controls was taped up; after taking the tape of I founfd that the whole assembly was missing. If I wanted to replace the whole control what would be the best brand of replacement to purchase that would hook up fairly easy to the existing cables? It also has the up and down button for the outdrive on the handle.

Re: Bad OMC control lever

Rick which one did you get? I'm shopping as well.

I got the CH-1700.

It REALLY has a nice feel and a sort of "click" going into and out of gear! I cannot actually remember who I got it from but it was around $290 + either free or nominal shipping!

I REALLY like the idea of having a "kill" lanyard ......... Engine dies if you fall out of the boat (although it's not good if you shut an engine off while underway......can you spell hydrolock?)!

It's a completely generic control. The instructions indicated that it will work with ANY I/O or outboard etc....

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Bad OMC control lever

Thanks for the help. I just ordered a new control and now I am thinking about replacing the cables since I already have it disassembled. They look like the original cables and are marked 168" (14ft). What type of cables will fit on a 1989 boat. I just want to make sure that I get the right kind.
