I have a 81' johnson 60hp. Last weekend it was hard to start and when it would catch it would fire one is all then it would run for 2-3 seconds then quit. I fugured i flooded it so after several attempts it started and ran fine for 2-3 hours of stop and go and continuous running, and fine restarts. Never been hard to start before. Then this weekend i start it fine and idle out then fast idle or 1/4 throttle just where you almost throw your largest wake, then throttle down to fast idle speen then open it up and instantly cuts out. I try and restart it wont so i ge t the trolling motor out and head back all while trying to restart. Would not start checked for spark on both plugs, and nothing. So go to the house and after several hours hook to the muffs and it starts fine but will cut out every now and then , which it would not do before, but would always restart and idle. I am thinking bad power pack, do any of yall have any thoughts. If you need more info on specific things ask ill try and fill in parts of diagnostic info if needed!

Oh a past problem was i think the kill wire shorting out as it would cut off then all of a sudden restart, i replaced the wire harness and this went away so i have a new harness and had many hours of trouble free running since this problem.

Now that i am thinking about it sometimes it was hard to restart warm just after switched off but very very infrequently!

Im getting frustrated with this it cust out wont restart then back at the house 3 hours later it starts?

Re: Bad power pack Maybe?

Failure under load can sometimes point to a faulty Power Pack.
NO SPARK ON ANY CYLINDER:

1. Disconnect the black/yellow stop wire and retest. If the engine's ignition has spark, the stop circuit has a fault-check the key switch, harness and shift switch.
2. Check the stator and trigger resistance and DVA output as given below:

Wire Color: Check to Wire Color :Resistance: DVA Reading

Brown wire :Brown/Yellow wire :450-550: 150V or more Connected
Black/White wire :White/Black wire :15-42 :0.6V or more Connected

Some engines use the following wiring on the trigger:

White wire :Blue wire :15-42 :0.6V or more Connected
White wire :Green wire :15-42 :0.6V or more Connected

3. Check the cranking RPM. A cranking speed of less than 250-RPM will not allow the system to spark properly.
4. Check the DVA output on the orange wires from the power pack while connected to the ignition coils. You should have a reading of at least 150V or more. If the readings are low, disconnect the orange wires from the ignition coils and reconnect them to a load resistor. Retest. If the reading is now good, the ignition coil is likely bad. A continued low reading indicates a bad power pack.
