Brought the drive to the shop today and the guy did a pressure test for me right there. Help 15psi and even up to 18psi. He touched the shift shaft on the lower unit and we could hear"psssss", He indicated a bad shift shaft seal.He also asked if I wnated teh impeller done and I agreed.
My question is "how much labor is involved with this job?" I assumed since the drive was apart that he should do the impeller right?

;) ...Thanks......Is this a rather normal part to fail? Seems like a wear item.

You didn't say what year/make of engine, and I assumed mercruiser  . My bad, if it is a omc or volvo wait for more feedback, the numbers I gave you will most likely not be correct. Seals are seals....They wear out....J

Its a 1992 Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen II :p .
So are the number still the same? Checked my manual but its hard to tell. Looks like you have to remove the shift shaft bushing from lower unit and replace those seals right? The impeller service is sraightforward

its about right BUT it really depends if it has not been apart before there all kinds of things that need to checked and things that may not come apart that easy

and once the shift seal is done it still has to pass a pressure/vacume test that was the main leak but may not be the only leak

tommays

If your drive is original, all the seals are old,and could be leaking,or will be soon.Doing the WPI is a standard operating proceedure.($22.00 or so).

DHP

The old shift shaft seal holder (The white ones) always leaked. When he puts a new one on it will be the black one and should work fine.
It should be pressure checked and vacuum checked when repaired, but usually (For me anyway) the rest of the drive is seldom a problem with leakage.
