Hi,
I have 1985 Formula 28PC. Twin Merc 260. The starter is bad on the Port engine, so it is between both engines. I am pretty sure I can slip the starter in and out without removing the manifolds. My question is , with very little room how do I break the bolts free.? I know this is a difficult question without seeing it , but any help is appreciated.

thanks

From the other side of the engine, under the sump. If you don't have room to get under the sump, consider pulling the engine...

Re: Bad Starter, Bad

A mechanic just replaced the starter in my new used boat before I bought it end of last season. I am suprised and impressed he managed to replace it without removing the manifolds. I know he didn't because I can't get any of the rusted bolts off the manifold. I assume he removed some additional hoses that are running under my manifold to make some more room. Don't know how he did it, but it was done and it doesn't look easy. Maybe your bolts come out easy?

If you really can't get to it, would you rather remove the manifold or engine?

Re: Bad Starter, Bad

i have never had to pull an engine to replace a starter, nor a manifold for that matter - i have seen guys pull manifolds to do it, maybe ive just been lucky so far

my boss threw me a starter job that he had quoted a motor pull to do, i looked at it told him i'd try without pulling the motor he told me good luck - ten minutes later i had the starter on his bench while he scratched his head

i guess just give it time and use a quality wrench, you may have to borrow a higher quality wrench to do it - trust me it does make a difference

You sometimes need a quality thin-walled socket, a universal drive, and a swival-head rachet to get the bolts loose. Consider using the new, smaller, high-torque starter as a replacement. It's much easier to install and works better. Hy
