Well, I thought everything was going too smooth. Trying to revive a 56 Evinrude bigtwin 30 and I did all the basic tune up things like replacing coils, points and condenser. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the fuel lines, replaced impeller, put in new gear oil and rebuilt the wiring harness converting it to a 12 volt system. I filled my barrel with water and hit the choke and starter button and nothing happened. I retraced all wiring on the 12 volt conversion diagram and everything is as it should be. I ran wires directly to the starter and it would click but not spin so I know my starter is bad? Is the replacement part for a 12 volt starter 277432? Any way of checking my wiring so I can be sure I did it correctly? Can I check to see if my starter solenoid is good? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

No, Jennie. You do not know that your starter is bad. It is much more likely that you have a connection in the starter circuit or solenoid that is bad. Take both battery cables off at both ends, scrub them shiny and reconnect. Let us know if that doesn't work and we can guide you through isolating the fault.

Re: Bad Starter on 56 Evinrude Bigtwin 30

If I am reading your post correctly, and you jumped your starter direct off of your battery, which is fully charged and load tested, and the cables are sufficient gauge and continuity, with good connection at ground and starter POS post, and you still cannot get it to spin, then yes you are correct, the starter is either toast or needs rebuild.

They can usually be rebuilt for much less than new. IF that is the case.

EDIT: Some jumper cables dont cut it. They are too thin gauge, OR you lose too much voltage from poor surface contact due to the teeth design of the clamps. Use a heavy gauge wire with proper connections. Hard wire POS from battery to POS post of starter. Bolt the other lead to a good, clean ground on powerhead, like starter bracket, and then touch the other end to the NEG post of battery. This bypasses all other ignition components, and should spin your starter.

Re: Bad Starter on 56 Evinrude Bigtwin 30

I believe I know the problem. I removed the starter and direct wired and it spun. I changed the impeller just before I tried to start and i think something didn't go back together correctly because its real hard to pull start. I pulled the plugs and its easier but there's still a problem. Its so hard to pull start that the starter wouldn't turn the flywheel so i thought the starter was bad but I think the problem lies with my impeller change. I had a small gap between the upper and lower units that closed up when i tightened the bolts back up is this normal? Other than that everything seemed to go OK. Its almost like Im trying to pull start in gear but the prop isn't spinning???

Ok all of that is being addressed in your OTHER thread. I would try to only have 1 thread going. We will all get confused here. The gearcase issue is addressed there.
