Bad stator? Or Fouling plugs?

Here's what has happened to me the past two times i've been out on the water. I idle for about 400yards, then run about 3800 rpms for 10 miles stop, idle for about 5minutes and run back the 10 miles, but when I go to idle the 400yards back to the slip the motor dies. It will start right back up no problem but 10 seconds later it dies again, Primer bulb is fine and the plug wires are fine, the plugs are relatively new, new thermostats, not overheating and great compression along with a new water pump and rebuilt carbs. Is it possible this could be a weak stator maybe at idle its no good? But if that were so I dont understand why it would idle the first 400yards and not the last. The engine was rebuilt recently so I have been putting a little extra oil in it but I dont think its enough to foul out the spark plugs. I did pop the spark plugs off and clean them but they werent bad at all. I tilted the engine all the way up thinking maybe one of the cyl is being flooded with oil? I think this because when I tilt it back in the water a lot of oil residue floats up. I cant really think of what is wrong here, maybe the fuel pump is going bad and not enough fuel is mixing with it, Im really not to sure. It's a 2001 Johnson 2 stroke 4cyl. 90HP. Thanks everyone, any input is welcome!

For $10 or $15 I'd have 4 new plugs in it next time out.

Do you have fresh fuel? I had issues with fuel that sat for only a week or so and my old 50 would not start or idle right but would run the same gas at wide open throttle. Hook it to a 6 gallon tank of known fresh fuel and see if it runs any better.

Do you have excessive smoke at full speed? If so, you may have an air leak allowing air into the gasoline line. If that occurs, the OMS pump will add more oil to the mix. You will see a blue cloud behind you if this is occuring.

If that is not it, try slowing down gradually on the way home. Run her down to minimum planing speed for a while, and then drop to fast idle, say 1800 for a while and see if the issue goes away. If so, I would bet your getting some vapor lock in the carbs. if not, it may be some sort of wierd ign issue.
