Band color question

I have seen several posts from folks concerning their Mercury's that say its a blue band or a red band motor (mine's red). What is the siginificance of the color band?

The color of the band tends to indicate the aproximate year of the motor. It is much better to provide the serial number of the motor and the HP, since it will tell the actual year.

Red bands were used in 1973, and likely for some years before and after. Blue bands suceeded red bands in 1976 and some other years.

And for the most part are fully interchangeable.
