Buying a boat that hasn't seen water in almost 10 years! Need help on what all I should do... other than run!

2001 Mariah with 3.0
ten years ago motor overheated out on the water. Motor was pulled from the boat, and was found that the water pump impeller was basically non existent. So the pump was replaced and the heads were decked.

I plan on building a make shift engine cradle and a few gauges to run the motor while it is out of the boat. Checking compression, plugs, I dont even know. Please help

and where do I start with the outboard!? What have i gotten myself into?

I can turn a wrench, I've done a few motor swaps on cars... boats are a new beast to me altogether.

provide water for test through the thermostat housing as that's where raw water comes into the motor.

shouldn't be hard. the lower unit comes off with a few bolts. youtube to the rescue. verify the pump impeller is good. you probably have toasted exhaust flappers and such as well. get a repair book and go through it.

first, after 10 years of sitting, the carb will need to be cleaned
oil should be changed

make sure you can turn the motor over (use the flywheel, never try to turn from the crank bolt)

after you make sure the fuel system is clean and the motor spins freely

with the engine sitting on a pallet:

• make sure that there is oil in it
• plumb a mechanical oil pressure gauge
• run a fuel line from the pump to a 1 gallon can
• bring a battery and wire the starter
• provide water to the thermostat housing
• run a wire from the coil + to the battery +
• jump the S-terminal on the starter and it will crank
• (dont use starting fluid)
• after it cranks over a few times, you should have fuel to the carb
• pump the carb twice (to prime and set choke)
• now jumper the starter again and it should fire and run

The VP OUTBOARD is much older than the boat, likely to be from the 70's or there abouts,

you are asking about an aux motor?

They are not made anymore ( to my knowledge ) so spare parts may be an issue,

if you like to muck about with old motors that's good but if you just want to have a less ancient backup motor replace it with a newer model,

there's sure to be someone around who would take it of your hands,

FWIW, I like mucking about with old donks,

as i ask these stupid questions keep in mind im not the one that took this motor out, and i certainly didnt disassemble it. so im working thru figuring out what goes where.

you said run water to thermostat housing. there are 4 ports on there, im assuming i should run hose to top left, bottom left goes to water circulator pump, bottom right goes to exhaust jacket, im guessing top left is input from raw water pump? and where does that top right line go that is much smaller than the others?

Sorry, there are 5 ports.
still assuming you want the garden hose on the top left port
