What am I doing wrong? I slip my boat in the upper Delaware Bay. I am up a creek in very shallow water at low tide. I use my boat at least once a week. It was painted before I put it in at the end of April. Two months later was covered with barnacles . I pulled it and had it power washed and painted again. This time I was covered with barnacles after one month. I am losing power and it kills my gas mileage. I will pull it again and power wash. Don't know if I should even paint again this year as it seems to do no good. A guy near me was painted at the same time with similar paint and is not having near as much trouble as I am. Any ideas?

Re: Barnacles again and again.

You are obviously using the wrong kind of bottom paint.

Do not continue to operate the boat with the fouled bottom! You are doing more than losing power. You are "lugging" the engine, causing excessively high combustion chamber tempatures. If you do that very long (and it does NOT take very long) you will damage the valves. Don't do it! (Don't ask me how I know, I just know, okay? :( )

What type of anti foul are you using? , if a yard is doing the work..arm yourself with info and watch them repaint...go here and read - http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/
Regardless of where you are that shouldnt happen with good BP.

Thanks. Yes a yard did the painting. I will check to see what kind of paint it is.

Bet you 10 bucks they used cheap paint...buy the paint yourself.(cheaper) then have them sand down the bottom....apply the new paint, keep in mind some paints cant go over other types..make sure they are compatible.

Man at this point I'd say invest in a boat lift and spray her down w/freshwater hose after every outing.

Rub the paint with a finger, it should stain your finger like chalk.

Re: Barnacles again and again.

you are up a small creek in very still water, this adds to the problem. a lift is the optimal cure.
