Base Timing using electronic tools

My engine is a 2002 Mercuiser 5.7 liter 260 HP EFI, serial number OL687277
The timing indicator normally attached to the timing cover is missing. Can timing be adjusted using a diagnostic computer?

need a engine serial not a outdrive serial but if it has a crank position sensor, then I`d say no

Being a 2002 I'm going to bet you have a distributer cap that looks like this



If you do then you cannot adjust the timing with a timing light. It is done by positioning the distributer in the correct location, and only very slight adjustments can be done

That is the engine serial number taken from a picture of the Mercruiser air cleaner cover lable. The outdrive serial number is different. The boat is actually a 2003 Bayliner Cierra. It is thought the engine is a leftover from the 2002 model year.

The distributor cap does not look like the one in Alldodge's picture. It looks like an automotive distributor cap. Seems to me a crank position sensor would be required to time it without using a timing light.

OK lost that bet, must be a TB-V distributor and MEFI-3 ECM.
While you can connect the computer and you can probably do it, but not sure it will be the same. Find out and lets us know how it work s out. Never tried it that way but sounds like it would work

One Mercruiser mechanic in Portsmouth, NH, says he can do it. However, I have now cruised from there to the Hudson River. I'll try a local tech and let you all know what happens.
