First off I'm normally a big twin V8 offshore performance boat driver who is pretty savvy when ti comes to car or boat engines/issues. I do most of everything myself.
I bought this engine from a duck hunter back in 2003/4. He was moving up and needed to unload. He started it up in his driveway and it purred like a kitten. After getitng it home I and my teen son used it on a 12' Gamefisher John-Boat just to tool around on (live on the water w/ocean access). Well then the thing sat on it's side for probably the last 3-4 years in my shed and yes I used pickled fuel so it should've been fine. I have since purchased (another deal on a toy) a 10.5' Avon inflatable with a 2-stroke 5hp Nissan which basically is good for nothing except ship to shore transport (slow). So I thought I'd break out the Mac-Daddy 9.9 and this puppy would scoot (remember, I'm a loud go-fast powerboat guy).
Well I put fresh gas, new impeller, gapped the plug, and began pulling like crazy with it clamped to my bulkhead lower unit in the water. After I don't know how many exhausting pulls it finally started but ran rough. I then put it in gear and left to run for several minutes to flush out any bad gas in the fuel bowl etc. With it up on RPM it sounded fine. But idle was rough. Well i shut it down and then did the re-start routine. Well I'll be darned if it didn't take another session of exhausting, cuss'n set of pulls to start again. I then left it alone for awhile, and did another round. same results.
I'm sure it's adjustments or maybe the carb needing cleaned. Could be even my cold startup procedure is a little off (didn't come with the manual)? Problem is if i use it and go down the channel a ways, shut it down, then later restart, I may not get it restarted. What are some basic things i could do to maybe make it a little easier to start and restart? I'm thinking the likely answer will be to clean out the carb and re-check the plugs/wires. What about idle or air/fuel mixture adjustments? If so where are they and what are the specs?
