Hey everyone, first of great forum! A lot of great information on here.

I'm looking at picking up a 15 ft Glasstream bass boat for a great price. My question is does anyone here run a bass boat on the Patuxent and Potomac rivers in Maryland?? We run jon boats all the time, so I don't think it will be a problem. However, I don't want to get the boat and then find out I can only fish/crab on calm days. Input appreciated.

Re: Bass boat on Patuxent and lower Potomac Rivers...

Welcome Mike: I don't have a Bass boat, but I was out on the Potamac around the Occoquan / Mattawoman Cr. portian of the Potomac yesterday. Bass boats have plenty of power to run, and gun over the rough chop, but they don't have much freeboard to sit, and fish in it. Most new ones are much bigger than 15' too ?
I had a 16' Starcraft with a 70 yamaha 2 stroke that I fished the mouth of the Potomac many, many times - even ventured out in the Chesapeake several miles with it, but I was fishing scared. It don't take long for the conditions to change! On many trips I couldn't fish because of the weather after driving the 2 hours to get there. Ultimately I sold that boat, and moved up to a 25' for just that reason. If you live close enough to really pick your days, and can get to saftey fast, have your heart set on a Bass boat because you plan to fish it in other senarios - go for it. Look at what others use in the areas you plan to fish. I don't see Bass boats at the mouth of the Potomac or Patuxent. I have been run out of Cornfield harbor in my 25' because of big waves! You could find a 18' center console that would serve you well.
Probably get one pretty cheap. Then you could fish the bay quite often. Just my opinion.

Anything less than 20' and your going to be very limited on the days you can get out south of the Rt.301 and Rt.4 bridges

we take little 14-16 ft flat bottom jon boats out in pax river from benedict bridge down to rt 4 bridge all the time. I think this bass boat is deeper than most, its a hybrid hull. The bow is similar to a tri hull, the stern is almost a flat bottom. I don't plan on running on the bay much if at all, couple friends have bigger boats that we use to hit the gas docks.
